SRAM FORCE FRONT DERAILLEUR, Clamp On 34.9
Light materials and light-effort shifting deliver a heavy advantage.
The SRAM Force road gruppo is defined by its across-the-board innovation. There's so much to see and learn about it that it's easy to overlook a component as bland as a front derailleur. But, in fact, the front derailleur is one of the true highlights of Force, and it's thanks to one elegant-but-small detail: The outer cage plate is precisely shaped to allow you to use all 10 cogs on your cassette while you're in the big chainring with NO chain rub. That's right, gone are the days of hearing the chain scrape against your front derailleur when you cross-chain, along with the associated headaches of trimming and re-trimming your derailleur based on your cog choice. It's a mechanic's delight since it allows for easy set up, and you'll especially appreciate it at the tail end of a hilly road race when shifting chainrings (a) feels like Atlas-like effort when you're coping with a body full of pain, and (b) is a strategic liability since it requires you to soft pedal while your chain moves from ring to ring. Races are won in the big chainring -- don't ever forget that.
When you're in the small chainring the Force DoubleTap shift lever will allow you one trim adjustment based on your chain angle. This is only needed (and only possible) when you're in the small ring, and it allows you to use any cog in complete silence when you're in the small ring.
The Force derailleur can handle any chainring differential up to 16 teeth. This means you'll use the same derailleur for a 53/39 crankset as you will a 50/36 or 50/34. No more need for a compact-specific front derailleur. The Force has a warm, gray finish, along with full aluminum construction and titanium hardware. The braze-on version weighs in at 88g, while the clamp-on versions run closer to 103g. Available in braze-on, 31.8mm clamp, and 34.9mm clamp.
