ZIPP 1080 TANDEM Race Wheel (Custom made to order)

Clincher, Dimpled 700c, Shimano, 145mm Hub

This all new ground-breaking torodial rim shape is designed to provide maximum aerodynamic advantage and has proven to be 29 seconds faster than a trispoke over 40 k. In wind tunnel testing it improves upon the record set by our 808 (82mm deep) rim and is still 80 g lighter than the lightest trispoke.

Our detailed wind tunnel research has allowed us to explore the relationship between rim shape and depth in multiple innovative ways. This 1080 wheel set is designed to extract the maximum from the passing air while eliminating the pulsing drag effects of the trispoke. It is effective at 2-3 degrees more wind yaw than even our popular 808 and produces a saving of 2-3 watts over our standard 404.

    HUB

    Phil Wood FSA/FSC Rear Touring Hub

    Phil Wood FSA (Field Serviceable Axle) and FSC (Field Serviceable Cassettes) touring hubs feature higher spoke counts for building stronger touring or Tandem specific wheels. The Hi-Lo hub flange design has a 15mm diameter and quick-release axles.

    FSC hub (for Shimano cassettes)

    • Hi-Lo flange rear sits on a 15mm diameter quick-release axle
    • Freehub body has four sets of double-row pawls engaging a 20-tooth ratchet
    • Four Phil Specd PWX02 bearings


    SPOKES

    Sapims CX-Ray bladed aero spoke is the leading choice of champions. CX-Ray spokes have an aerodynamic advantage over round spokes and build into lighter, stronger wheels. With a weight nearly 30% lighter than standard double butted spokes, you would expect to give up strength. CX-Ray spokes withstand more than 3.5 million load reversals in fatigue tests, 3x more than any spoke on the road.

    CX-Ray aero spokes are produced from high-tensile 18/8 stainless steel, which is ideally suited for the rigorous demands of spokes. Even downhill racers use CX-Ray spokes because of their strength and durability.

    NIPPLES

    Sapims original Polyax nipples have a rounded profile, which allows up to 9 degrees of adjustment for better spoke seating. Improved seating angle increases spoke life and overall wheel durability.

    Polyax nipples are ideally suited for wheels with deep cross sections or tight spoke seats as they prevent problems arising from misalignment. Standard spoke nipples have a tendency to straighten themselves away from the direction of the spoke, but the rounded design of the Polyax nipple head reduces the stresses produced by axial and lateral forces inherent in wheels with low spoke counts.

    Polyax nipples realign themselves within a rim hole up to 9 degrees in the radial direction and 6 degrees in the axial direction.
